About Arkansas Valley Community Center

Arkansas Valley Community Center Makes a Difference

The Arkansas Valley Community Center Board (AVCC) has been in existence since 1966; begun by a small group of parents wanting a place for their children to attend school and be with others. Individuals with developmental disabilities typically did not attend public school at that time.

Today the AVCC serves approximately 200 children and adults with developmental disabilities in the tri-county area of Otero, Bent, and Crowley Counties.

New Building Project

Tiger Field to AVCC

Arkansas Valley Community Center has embarked on an exciting journey and your generosity is more important than ever. The existing building occupied by AVCC (1500 San Juan Avenue in La Junta) was built in 1954 and purchased by AVCC in 1975. While the facilities have served AVCC well for nearly 35 years, the building is showing its age and has outlived its usefulness for AVCC’s needs While the building has been remodeled and improved in many ways, it would require great investment to modify for today’s needs. The AVCC Board of Directors has determined that it makes more business sense to build a new facility that will best allow AVCC to meet the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. A modernized building design and room layout are needed to provide services using state-of-the-art programming and equipment for the next 40 years Your financial contribution will be used for the new building that will provide space for current program and administrative functions, as well as for future growth. New technology will be used in the facility, as will areas and techniques to calm, develop the senses, and learn new skills. Through the support of people like you, we will continue helping the children and adults in the Arkansas Valley who have developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential. It is joyful work because every day we witness success to some degree. Your financial support shows your belief that a brighter future is possible for those with developmental disabilities. On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and individuals in service and their families of AVCC, we want to thank you for the gift of sharing.
